The False Dichotomy is just that: false. This fallacy deliberately excludes other alternatives that might be preferable to those you’re provided. If you realize that the choice you’re being offered is an incomplete choice, the False Dichotomy unravels.
the results clearly show that anger is more influential than other emotions such as joy or sadness, a finding that could have significant implications for our understanding of the way information spreads through social networks
This is a really interesting find which might have several ramifications for how social media develops in the future. E g how many companies or governments are interested in communication structure that increases the speed and spread of anger?
“If government wishes to see a depression ended as quickly as possible, and the economy returned to normal prosperity, what course should it adopt? The first and clearest injunction is: Don’t interfere with the market’s adjustment process. The more the government intervenes to delay the market’s adjustment, the longer and more grueling the depression will be, and the more difficult will be the road to complete recovery.”—Murray Rothbard (via anarchei)
“When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all Power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.”—Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) Source: (1821) in a letter to Gideon Granger. California Senator Dianne Feinstein has proposed an amendment to the Media Shield Law, a law targeting the First Amendment which would limit the law’s protection only to “real reporters,” not bloggers and other upstart alternative media types.
A real reporter, declared Feinstein during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, is “a salaried agent” of a media company like the New York Times or ABC News, not a “shoestring operation with volunteers and writers who are not paid.”
Feinstein voiced her concern “that the current version of the bill would grant a special privilege to people who aren’t really reporters at all, who have no professional qualifications,” like bloggers and citizen journalists.
Good to know my speech is only worth protecting if someone is paying for it, Senator Feinstein.
Is there anything good that this woman’s ever proposed, or is she just an utter tyrant?
FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA — Deputies arrested a 40-year-old man Thursday evening after a brief standoff at his Apache Street home.
Lon Allen Groves has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery, kidnap and firing weapon while under the influence.
According to an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s press release, Groves and his wife were arguing over which granddaughter was her favorite when the intoxicated man pushed her to the ground and put a gun to her head.
The woman’s son, according to Groves arrest report, walked in and saw Groves holding a 9 mm pistol to his mother’s head. He grabbed his younger sibling, and called 911 once they were safely outside of the home.
The woman said Groves held her against her will for a short period of time.
After deputies arrived, Groves walked out carrying an AR-15, semi-automatic rifle, the loaded pistol and a second magazine.
The deputies had a short stand-off with Groves before he put down the guns and was arrested.
